Lucky 32

Lucky 32 is a NC original, with two locations - Cary and Greensboro. I flew home last Friday for a visit; my parents picked me up at the airport and our first stop was Lucky 32. They change the menu seasonally and were in fall mode when we visited. We couldn't resist ordering the sweet potato hush puppies - yum.

If you ever get the chance to visit NC, I highly recommend a trip!

Spices and Herbs

There are so many herbs and spices available, even at your local grocery store. Building a collection of herbs and spices in your own kitchen cupboard opens up the possibilities for new recipes you never imagined!

Here are some tips on choosing herbs and spices:

1. Buy one new herb or spice each week during your regular grocery shopping trip. Add about $5.00 to your grocery budget.

2. After you have the basics, choose an herb or spice you've heard of before, but maybe haven't ever used. Then move on to those that you have never heard of before AND have no idea what they smell or taste like. (You'll be surprised what the fragrances remind you of and may be inspired to make a dish you've never made before!)

3. Buy the smallest container of new herbs and spices as to keep them as fresh as possible.

4. Avoid bagged herbs and spices - these have usually been infiltrated with oxygen, the killer of all things fresh.

Quick Bites

Garam Masala

This is a blend of freshly ground spices, including coriander. The primary use of garam masala is in Indian cooking. For all meats, poultry, seafoods, vegetables, and curries. Use part of the garam masala in the recipe during cooking and part near the end.

(Garam Masala is my latest purchase of a new spice. Smells like it would be good in sweet dish - probably because of the corinader.)
